Managing Risk: Why Archaeology Matters

One of AOC’s strengths is managing risk for our clients whether they are involved in infrastructure projects, windfarms, supermarketsor housing developments. Our 20 years of experience tell us that archaeology can often have a significant effect on project timescales and costs if not managed correctly from the start. We have a pro-active approach that helps clients through every stage of development: from pre-acquisition of land to planning decisions, from construction through to successful project completion. In an hour long seminar delivered by members of our senior staff we stress that leaving heritage issues to the last minute often costs the client unnecessary delays and finance. During the presentation we take the audience through the whole planning process and stress how our heritage consultants manage clients’ risk at every stage, not just during construction.

Heritage legislation and its consequences for development in Britain

Our highly qualified and specialist staff keep up to date with all recent changes in heritage legislation which often affect the planning process, changes many clients are often not aware of. This seminar covers the range of planning legislation, regulation and guidance on the treatment of heritage in the planning process. Delivered by the Chairman of AOC and Head Consultant, John Barber, the seminar looks in particular at recent changes in heritage legislation and the challenges and opportunities this raises for future developments across Britain. The talk will be based on recent case studies but given the variability of heritage problems, general principles will be the principal focus of attention.

Heritage, communities and development

Recent legislation reiterates the need for local communities to be actively engaged in the pre-planning consultation process. Further, it stresses the need for communities to be encouraged to re-engage with their heritage. This seminar, delivered by AOC’s Managing Director, Dr Andy Heald – an expert in community archaeology and mitigation projects - introduces the current role of local communities and heritage in the planning process and legislation. Using recent case studies as examples, concern will be with illustrating how partnership working between developers and local communities and their heritage can be beneficial to all parties and be harmonious with various national, regional and local policies. We have found that heritage is an emotive issue for local communities, particularly in proposed development areas. A pro-active approach at an early stage is essential.

Mitigating visual impact: challenges and solutions

Visual impacts on the settings of Scheduled Ancient Monuments, Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas, Gardens and Designed Landscapes and World Heritage Sites are increasingly becoming significant obstacles to many developments, particularly windfarms, and the scale of this obstacle is gradually increasing. The problem is compounded by the requirement to consider not only visual impacts on the designated object itself but on its setting and in the case of World Heritage designations, we have seen recently the issue of visual impacts on the amenity zone of the designated area, i.e. an impact on the setting of a setting of a designated object. In this hour long seminar the Chairman of AOC, and Head Consultant, John Barber will offer a definition of setting that has been tested at public inquiry and suggest strategies for the mitigation of landscape scale visual impacts.
