Bronze Age timber circle and Saxon settlement, Shaftesbury, Dorset

In mitigation of the impact of a supermarket development in Shaftesbury, Dorset, AOC Archaeology Group were commissioned by Tesco to carry out archaeological investigation works over the 2 ha development site. Following the archaeological investigations on site a programme of post-excavation analyses was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group.

The post-excavation analyses revealed that the earliest archaeology encountered during the investigation was a group of post-holes dated to 1880-1640 BC and which had been intentionally burnt down probably not long after construction. The post-holes may represent the remains of a Bronze Age timber circle.

A Saxon kiln discovered during the excavation, complete with the products of its last use, was also analysed. This kiln was probably fired in the early to mid 9th century. The kiln was used to produce Crockerton-type ware.

A significant amount of domestic waste, including pottery and animal bones from 49 pits, 24 wells and several enclosure ditches identified an area of domestic occupation during the later Saxon and medieval periods, which provides clear evidence of the eastern extent of Shaftesbury during this period. Agricultural land divisions were apparent beyond this area.

Upon the imminent publication in the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society Proceedings, the planning condition will be satisfied and signed off.
