People in the Past - an Iron Age settlement at Braehead

Braehead enclosure is an important and rare survival of a prehistoric site within the City of Glasgow. It provides a good opportunity to study People in the Past or People and Place, attainment outcomes in the social subjects component of environmental studies. This pack can be downloaded and incorporated into any project focusing on:

  • Prehistoric Scotland
  • Roman Scotland
  • Local history
  • The environment of the Clyde
  • Aspects of the physical and built environment

The material in this education pack was intended for use by teachers and pupils visiting the excavation of an Iron Age settlement at the Braehead Shopping Centre, Glasgow. This education resource pack covers "The Ancient World", one of five recommended historical areas of study. Its structure and content have been designed in line with current 5-14 curriculum guidelines. Each section of the pack provides links to the 5-14 curricular guidelines, suggested activities and pupils' activity sheets. The pupil activities in this pack can cover all attainment target levels of the 5-14 curriculum. This education pack contains materials designed to:

  • Familiarise teachers with the site before a visit
  • Provide pupils with ideas for research of the site prior to a visit
  • Provide pupils with suitable on-site activities
  • Provide pupils with ideas for evaluating the excavation

This education pack will enable pupils to develop the skill strands of planning, recording, interpreting, presenting and evaluating. The children will also develop informed attitudes to Scotland's cultural heritage and its preservation.
