Campbell’s Soup Factory, King’s Lynn: building recording and evaluation

AOC Archaeology are working in partnership with Tesco at the site of their new store at Campbells Meadow, King’s Lynn which, until recently, was occupied by the Campbell’s Soup Factory. The first stage of archaeological work comprised an historic building survey of the dilapidated 1950’s factory and water tower - a local land mark emblazoned with the famous Campbell’s logo. Representatives from King’s Lynn Civic Society were given a tour of the site whilst the survey was completed shortly before the factory’s demolition.

The next phase of work will comprise a trial excavation of the land lying to the south of the new store. Historic maps of this area, dating to the 16th century, show an east to west aligned channel identified as Goule Bank or Dyke, whilst medieval documentary sources indicate that Hardwick Road, to the north, began life as a causeway across waterlogged ground.

The trial excavation will attempt to locate Goule Bank and retrieve evidence to provide an insight into the site’s changing environment from the prehistoric period to the modern day.
