AOC and the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme
AOC Archaeology has been working on a series of archaeological impact assessments for Transport for London’s Barclays Cycle Hire scheme on behalf of Mott MacDonald.
Transport for London is currently in the process of expanding the cycle hire scheme further into the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Hackney , as well as increasing the number of cycle docking stations within the existing network covering Camden, Lambeth, Islington, Southwark, the City of Westminster, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the City of London. This scheme will include the installation of approximately 200 new and extended docking stations. Archaeological impact assessments are needed for the proposed docking stations within Archaeological Priority Areas (areas identified by the local council as having the potential for archaeological evidence to be encountered). The assessments look at a range of sources, including historic mapping and the Greater London Historic Environment Record database (which records archaeology and heritage assets), to establish the likely nature and extent of the archeological resource within the proposed sites and to identify any known or potential heritage constraints or risks.
To date, AOC has provided over 40 archaeological impact assessments, successfully scoping out those sites where no archeological impact is likely and providing advice and recommendations on those sites where a potential has been identified.
