Terrain Modelling: Iron Age Earthworks

Terrain models are an invaluable tool in landscape survey. Traditionally, these are constructed by collecting large numbers of height measurements, before interpolating terrain surfaces. Recent developments in survey technology, however, allow the construction of very high-resolution models of landscapes and archaeological sites, using differential GPS, terrestrial laser scanning or LiDAR from aircraft. Where previously it may only have been possible to produce terrain models at resolutions of several metres at best, it is now possible to capture micro-topographic detail at resolutions of several centimetres.

Terrain models are extremely versatile tools, and are invaluable in landscape analysis and as detailed records of landscapes and sites prior to excavation or development.
