Managing Risk: The Commonwealth Games Village, Glasgow

AOC has extensive experience in undertaking excavations across Scotland in rural and urban areas. In recent years we have worked on some of the most important and complex prehistoric and medieval sites in the country. As well as recovering important archaeology we pride ourselves on developing and delivering cost-effective strategies in complex situations that minimise risk of delay for our clients.

AOC have recently been working at the Commonwealth Games site in Glasgow to fulfil the archaeology requirement of the planning process. AOC were required to carry out formal excavation (on Victorian Waters Works & Print Works) and watching briefs on all ground breaking work on this heavily contaminated site. Prior to the start of on-site works AOC formulated the Project Design in setting out how the archaeological works could be undertaken safely in extremely polluted environment where some normal archaeological procedures would prove impractical. The work involved close collaboration with the soil remediation contractors and other consultants in ensuring the work was undertaken in a thoroughly professional and safe manner while ensuring the priorities and schedules of the overall project were maintained and the client brief fulfilled. As part of this requirement Historic Building Recording, Surveying and Excavation was undertaken.

As well as finishing on time and in budget we found important archaeology related to Scottish Industrial Revolution including evidence for the Glasgow Waterworks, one of the earliest in Glasgow, Springfield print and dye works, and the designed landscape of Dalmarnock House.
