Cramond Roman Fort

Cramond is well-known for its Roman finds – the fort, bath-house, industrial complex and the spectacular Cramond Lioness funerary sculpture. AOC Archaeology Group is carrying out a new excavation of Cramond Roman Fort to reveal more of Roman Cramond, in a project funded by the City of Edinburgh Council. The excavation will re-examine parts of the Roman barracks and gatehouse previously revealed in excavations in the 1950s around Cramond Kirk, which lies within the centre of the Roman Fort.

The excavation is being undertaken in partnership with volunteers from the local community, the Cramond Association and Heritage Trusts, the Edinburgh Archaeological Field Society and the Cramond Management Group and is taking place 9am – 5pm weekdays and 10am – 5pm weekends from 16th August to 28th September 2008.

The excavation is open to the public and guided tours of the excavation will be conducted over the weekend afternoons of 13th and 14th September as part of Scottish Archaeology Month. Anyone wanting to come along is welcome. As John Lawson, the City of Edinburgh Council Archaeologist who is managing the project, says, ‘This is a great opportunity to involve the local community in a unique event. It’s not every day you get to dig a Roman Fort!’
