Building conservation: conserving a door at Craigievar Castle, Aberdeenshire

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned to conserve a small door from one of the turrets at Cragievar Castle. The door showed evidence of past woodworm infestation and wet rot; there was also algal growth. The glass window was also held insecurely by putty, which was cracked and missing in places.

The door was cleaned and treated for woodworm and rot. The putty in the small window was replaced to provide a more secure fit, and the glass cleaned. Since door was to be returned to an exposed location it was given a protective wax coating to minimise the damage from weathering. The iron fittings were also cleaned and coated, allowing the door to be returned to its original position. AOC Archaeology Group also provided a maintenance programme schedule to aid the long term care of the door.
