Conservation Planning and Management

AOC Archaeology Group has growing experience in providing conservation support to historic building recording and conservation, such as solving a preservation problem. Historic doors bear the brunt of all that man and the weather can throw at them, but can still survive for many centuries, although in a weakened state. In some cases the wood is too weak to support its hinges and locks as was the case with a door from Melrose Abbey Commendator’s House. The AOC Archaeology Group conservation team was called in by Historic Scotland to carry out a condition survey. The AOC Conservators also made proposals for a new support system to enhance the long-term preservation of this feature, through the development of a sustainable maintenance programme.
