AOC Archaeology Group were commissioned by Barker Construction to undertake building recording of Ellistones Barn in Stainland to clear a condition of planning consent, required by the West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service, who advise the local authority on archaeological matters. Ellistones Barn was deemed significant because of its potential early date as an aisled barn in the region, and, as such, dendrochronology was also required on some of the timbers.
The AOC Archaeology Group building recording work included a detailed photographic record of the site using Medium Format cameras. A drawn and written record of the buildings as well as a brief map regression analysis to place the site into context was also completed. The building recording identified that the original barn may not have originally been an aisled barn as first supposed by the listing description, but a three-bay threshing barn, possibly weatherboarded, with later extensions to the north and south-east. The dendrochronological assessment identified that there were a number of timbers within the barn that were suitable for dendrochronological analysis and one of the sample timbers used in the construction of the barn was felled in AD 1468.
