Permission to redevelop the farm from agricultural use to residential use was being sought. Permission was granted on condition that an archaeological record was made of the agricultural buildings. A specification had to be produced outlining a programme of archaeological works in order to satisfy the Cumbria County Council’s requirements enabling redevelopment to commence.
AOC Archaeology Group agreed a specification with the Council and implemented the archaeological works between August and October 2005. These works were designed to record the buildings appearance and account for its development. A number of early features were identified from historical maps that included the farm’s original entrance. The buildings were found to have been laid out according to the Model Farm principal that rationalised storage and access to the farm and was found to date to the early 19th century.
AOC Archaeology Group’s work successfully fulfilled the planning requirement enabling the proposed development to proceed.
